I was looking at a Hip hop documentary on how music artist prefer light skin models over dark skinned women. Throughout this documentary they went round to various hip hop artists.
Asking the questions:
What exactly is beautiful? Is it how Snow white, Goldie locks or a long hair thick red bone.
Why artists they tend to use exotic (light skinned) girls? Throughout this documentary they are unfolding issues with our complexions. Thembia Mshaka (Author/Producer on BET)-‘They are looking for Goldie locks. There looking from Cinderella. All of that plays into this notion of who’s beautiful and who isn’t.’
Dr Norment (Black studies chairman at Temple University)- With hip-hop…sex sales and the notion of beauty and how beauty is defined in America is.Miss America, with blonde hair and blue eyes.
However a model had a completely different view on hip-hop music video and the reasons why light skinned model were preferred.
Dollicia Bryan (Light skinned model)-It has nothing to do with being light skinned and being more beautiful, it’s just that with hip-hop and markets, it is very multi-cultural. So sometimes if you do have light skinned females they are able to go for Hispanic, Demanican or Italian. So it just allows many multi-racial markets can get a hit from just one girl. She believed that it was more business than anything else and that one female is able to entertain more than market.
My opinion-This documentary gets a numerous of people to speak on the issues of how light skin models are favoured. However in my opinion I believe that dark and light skinned models are seeing it from different points of views and not understanding where another is coming from. As dark skinned models feel that not having the lead roles in hip-hop videos is a race supremacy and discrimination issue, and only leaves them to feel discriminated against and almost as if they are not good enough because of their dark complexion. Whereas light skinned females feels that it is just business and ways that the business and ways that business can market a vast majority of people.
