Skin Whitening.

Skin Whitening.
Welcome to my blog!J Throughout this blog I will be answering the following questions. Why lighter skinned black People are more accepted in society. Why that is dark skinned black people feel light skinned people are superior to them? What are their stereotypical judgements about dark and light skinned blacks? What input the media has had into making us black people feel this inferior vs superior way? & most importantly why are we having this bloody argument in the first place?
Now sit back, Put your feet up & prepare for a journey full of laughter, shock, humour & excitement. One thing for sure it's definitely going to be an eye opener.

ENJOY!! JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ

Goffy Goff!!

GOFFMAN
The famous Goffy Goff said that ‘One common way that individuals attempt to avoid the negative identity implications of stigmatizing attribute is to identify with ones “in-group,” or with others who share the stigmatizing attributes.'

A simple way of putting this is that we join groups to gain acceptance. And this is how we as individuals either take on new ideologies, representation, mode of address and new identities. However  because of these new identites we can sometimes lose sight of the culture and values we use to have.

Whos Better?..Errrr ME ME ME!!...Errr Naa!

Throughout one of physical elements was constantly brought up. Hair. The length, the colour and the texture was what they seemed to value to most.I ask myself why this is. Could it be jealously? Naaa I don’t think so.Could it just be the ways they are expressing there inequality they feel they experience? No I don’t think it’s that either.

I believe it;s because being light skinned is what is closest to white so they feel that the way they are able to associate themselves with white Caucasian people is through there physical appearance. These being the length and silky texture of their hair etc. And as white people are seen as having power and authority it then allows light skinned people to feel that they can associate certain physical feature on their body with white people.Especially their hair.

Lightie VS Darkie

I was looking at a Hip hop documentary on how music artist prefer light skin models over dark skinned women. Throughout this documentary they went round to various hip hop artists.
Asking the questions:
What exactly is beautiful? Is it how Snow white, Goldie locks or a long hair thick red bone.
Why artists they tend to use exotic (light skinned) girls? Throughout this documentary they are unfolding issues with our complexions.
Thembia Mshaka (Author/Producer on BET)-‘They are looking for Goldie locks. There looking from Cinderella. All of that plays into this notion of who’s beautiful and who isn’t.’

Dr Norment (Black studies chairman at Temple University)- With hip-hop…sex sales and the notion of beauty and how beauty is defined in America is.Miss America, with blonde hair and blue eyes.

However a model had a completely different view on hip-hop music video and the reasons why light skinned model were preferred.

Dollicia Bryan (Light skinned model)-It has nothing to do with being light skinned and being more beautiful, it’s just that with hip-hop and markets, it is very multi-cultural. So sometimes if you do have light skinned females they are able to go for Hispanic, Demanican or Italian. So it just allows many multi-racial markets can get a hit from just one girl. She believed that it was more business than anything else and that one female is able to entertain more than market.

My opinion-This documentary gets a numerous of people to speak on the issues of how light skin models are favoured. However in my opinion I believe that dark and light skinned models are seeing it from different points of views and not understanding where another is coming from. As dark skinned models feel that not having the lead roles in hip-hop videos is a race supremacy and discrimination issue, and only leaves them to feel discriminated against and almost as if they are not good enough because of their dark complexion. Whereas light skinned females feels that it is just business and ways that the business and ways that business can market a vast majority of people.

I Have A Dream...Really?...Or Isit A Nightmare We Are Still Living?

The life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.’

This quote taken from the famous Martin Luther King speech ‘I have a dream.’ Sadly in my opinion still relates to our black communities today.
Black communities are not only to blame though. The media plays a BIG part in the way that we look at the society. Through the media we can form ideologies and start to build up representations of people.

See For Yourself!

Now see for yourself.FIRST HAND.One video where their are lighter skinned models and another where there their dark skinned models.Watch 15 secs of each video to see for yourself!

Discussions!!

Whilst doing my research I found a website where people spoke on a topic question.'Why is someone so hard on darkskin girls?' Where people can post their comments or give their opinions on this question. All I can do is just laug..Have a read of 1 comment I had to print screen.(Click on picture to enlarge)

Once upon a time...Back In The Day....

Willie Lynch wrote a letter in 1712.He was a slave owner.
THIS IS PART OF HIS LETTER!..Have a read.

Don't forget you must pitch the old black VS. The young black males and the young black male against the old black male. You must use the dark skinned slaves VS. The light skin slaves. You must use the female VS the male, and the male VS, the female. You must always have your servants and OVERSEERS distrust all blacks, but it is necessary that your slaves trust and depend on us.’

This is a just a small part of his letter. So powerful.Yet still till today there is a strong division between black people because of the complexions of our skins.

Article...

This article written in the 'CBS Interactive business network' I personally do believe that the white race has always had a supremacy over any race and that there are some advantages of being white or light skin.
'Blackness and the concomitant set of values' This quote signifies that colours in themselves already have the connotation behind them and because they are the races of people this connotation automatically take on the connotations that come with that colour.
She speaks on the 'bleaching' topic. She criticises this as she only understands it as a form of reconstruction of the skin only used to indicate a desire to be white or light skinned.

WOW!! That's the first!

In the hip hop industry the rappers are dark skinned and the models on there
music videos that are light skinned. This has just become apart of the Hip Hop culture. So perhaps the music industry could of just seen him as a marketing gamble.

His proven them wrong though. His talent has shone through thoses obstacles.

Primary Primary Primary!!

These were the 4 questions I asked. From this individual she described herself as a dark skinned girl. And that she was not aware of this particular issue in the black community.Perhaps she had not experience it first hand. However she had heard there was a problem. Also that the role models in the media can be both negative and positive. But it just depends who they are influenced by.She then went on the answer that there were some negative and positive issues with the different complexion models being represented on our television screen.

This girl also described herself as light skinned, but only because she was told by other people. She was aware of the complexion issues in the black community. She answers that she does not see why people feel they have to change there colour of their skin. Also stating that she felt there was some negative influences in the media, but the majority were seen as positive. However did not feel that there were not enough dark skinned models in the media. She felt that that dark skinned models are not seen as much in the media as light skinned models.

I gave out further questionnaires 3 people were aware of the complexion issues in the black community also going on to say that lighter skinned people are more favoured and feel that they are better than darker skinned people.A person went as far as saying that 'Black is seen as ugly'.Hmm she seems to have very strong believes. However it was good to see the different opinions and ideologies people have.

The Darker The Model The Sweetie The Picture!

IM HOT & YOUR NOT!

CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG! WHICH I NEVER AM! But the king magazine is targeted at a African American audience,so how comes I can only see not one African American on the front of this magazine. This is a a classic example of how the media brainwashes young African Americans in to thinking that this is the representation of black not to mention the mode of address. And I know for sure that theses models are not African American.I cant be fooled. And neither should you be.OH HOW SO POWERFUL THE MEDIA IS...

Couldn't Say It Better Myself

http://skindeepthenovel.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/the-darker-the-berry-the-more-invisible/
When black people are represented in the media or want to be rewarded .I wouldn't call it a coincidence but it always seems to be lighter or mixed raced actors, musician that represents the colour. What about  the other shades in the colour black. Have a quick read through

I think this article written was put perfectly.Nicely done..
